US Supreme Court hands major victory to Big Tobacco

supreme-courtThe US Supreme Court gave a substantial victory to major tobacco firms Monday, rebuffing an appeal that would have allowed the government to pocket 280 billion dollars of their profits.The decision not to hear the case dealt a potentially fatal blow to long-running government efforts to penalize tobacco firms for 50 years of allegedly deceptive practices aimed at getting people hooked on smoking, the most preventable cause of premature death in the United States.

steal of cigarettesTwice in the last two days Evansville stores have been the target of break-ins involving thefts of cigarettes, according to Evansville Police Department reports.In both burglaries, a brick was used to break through a front door to gain entry.The first burglary was at the Buehler’s Buy Low grocery store in the 200 block of North Main Street at 1:35 a.m. Monday, according to police.A video showed what appeared to be a black male wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and jeans inside the store, a report said. He may also have been wearing gloves.
