A sedentary lifestyle could be as damaging to health as smoking

People who sit at their desks all day are being told it could be as damaging to health as smoking.

A team at Queen’s University has said it could shorten life span and increase the risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

They are now working on new ways of encouraging people to be up and about more during the day.

Dr Mark Tully from Queens University uses a treadmill at his desk instead of a chair.

He said the ill-effects from a sedentary lifestyle are having an impact on society: “Clearly if an individual started smoking today there would be very high risks of quite a number of diseases and we are in no way advocating that people stand up and smoke.

“Rather what we are saying is that because there are so many people in our society that sit for such long periods of time that when you add all those ill-effects up, that the burden it places on society is quite large,” said Dr Tully.
