Did you know that tobacco use in the United States costs an estimated $197 billion a year in lost productivity and health care costs? Add to that second-hand smoke, which costs an additional $10 billion in losses. Tobacco use contributes to one of every five deaths, and smokers die an average of 13 years earlier than nonsmokers.

“What we found is if you treat smoking like other health conditions and diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes, you’re more likely to be successful,” says lead author Anne Joseph, a physician and director of the University of Minnesota’s applied clinical research program. “With blood pressure, you’ll give medication to get near target goals, change diet and lifestyle and keep monitoring.”

Smoking causes 20% of US deaths
New evidence has emerged which suggests that smoking causes 20% of overall deaths in America.Published in the journal Epidemiology, the new report, which was written by Reuters Health and lead by Dr Brian Rostron, previously of the University of California, indicates that half a million Americans die each year as a result of tobacco consumption. Overall, it is believed that 2.5 million Americans die each year from all causes.
