no smoking at metro railIf you’re riding the MetroRail , be sure to put out that cigarette. Changes have taken effect at all Capital Metro rail station platforms along the Red Line after the CapMetro Board adopted a new tobacco-free policy July 26. This means all tobacco products will be prohibited near the passenger boarding areas and on the boarding platforms at each station.

Signs will be installed, and ashtrays will be removed at all stations. However, tobacco use will still be permitted outside of the designated tobacco-free zone. The Capital Metro Board said 66 percent of riders who answered a survey about the policy support or strongly support it. Transit field supervisors will ask those who violate the policy to leave the tobacco-free area or to stop using tobacco products.

Customers can report violations to the policy by calling the Go Line.

The policy also applies to Capital Metro-owned transit centers and Park & Rides. Boarding areas are set to follow suit in January 2011.
