Consumers interested in purchasing cigarettes will be handed simple catalogues illustrating cigarette packages and price information.Tobacco products will be listed in catalogues by name, package size and retail price. Product images may also be included. The rudimentary nature of the catalogue is intended to prohibit it from being used as a marketing tool.

University of Houston health organizations hoped to make students an offer they couldn’t refuse Thursday: Free food in exchange for cigarettes.The groups offered a plate of barbecue, chips and a drink to students who turned over their cigarette packs in an effort to curb smoking, with the ultimate goal being a smoke-free campus. The campaign is part of The Great American Smokeout, an annual effort to encourage Americans to kick the habit.

A picture is worth a thousand words and soon, cigarette packs will have a disturbing story to tell. In a dramatic change to cigarette packaging, this morning, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathy Sebelius unveiled large, graphic health warnings that will be mandatory for all cigarette packs sold in the U.S.The labels are required under the 2009 law that gave the Food and Drug Administration the authority to regulate tobacco for the first time ever. The 36 proposed warning labels will cover 50 percent of a cigarette pack and will convey images of smoking’s negative health effects.
