14 years ‘plenty of time’ to quit smoking
A warning to New Zealand’s 600,000 smokers: The Government has committed to making the country smokefree by 2025. Its “get tough” plan includes the laws around the promoting and packaging of tobacco products. “We’re talking about a highly addictive substance, and 2025 seems to be a reasonable time to give people the opportunity to give up,” says Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia. A smokefree New Zealand within 14 years is an ambitious goal, but those involved in helping New Zealanders quit say it is achievable.

One obstacle to getting older people to quit smoking is mindset.“They say that they’ve smoked for 40 years and it hasn’t killed them so they aren’t stopping now,” said Clara Hinton, tobacco consultant for Somerset County. Hinton teaches weekly smoking cessation classes. “A growing number of people are enrolling in classes, which is a good thing, but they aren’t enrolling for their health. They are enrolling because of the cost.”

SMOKERS daunted by quitting forever are being urged to ditch the cigarettes for just one day.Solent Healthcare Quitters is offering a new service where smokers can try quitting for 24 hours, without having to commit to stopping forever. The Quit Smoking for One Day programme offers the same free support but comes without the pressure of kicking the habit for good.With 27 in 100 people in Southampton smoking, the team hopes that this new scheme will encourage more to quit.
